Maio

Island Characteristics

Maio is located south of Boa Vista and Santiago and was first discovered by Europeans in 1460 in May hence it's name.

The fact that Maio has the second largest airport in Cape Verde means tremendous potential for tourists and property developers. Having said that, however, few tourists make it to Maio but those that do often find they mesmerised by the islands' peace and quite.

Maio has numerous very beautiful white sandy beaches and the island has escaped from too much pollution. The varied and abundant sea life will delight any fisherman, and the vast deserted beaches supporting a number of species of sea birds should thrill the bird watchers.

Maio is a quite and friendly place, dry, arid and essentially flat, the highest point of the island is Monte Penoso, with an altitude of 436 meters. There is very little irrigated land here, although the island does boast the biggest forest park in Cape Verde.
